Learn how to shop for and prepare food wisely by becoming a healthy food detective.
When farmers spray fertilizers on their crops–which conventional farmers often do–the result may be health problems in people. How? Synthetic pesticides, although invisible, can be left as residues on food you eat. And washing and peeling may not remove them from foods like apples, pears, and potatoes.

Fact: These apples were grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. Fact: Conventional apples are sprayed with synthetic chemicals at least 14 times during their growing time.

Question: Which would you rather eat?
The apples on the left or the ones on the right?

If you answered "the ones on the left" you are on target. These are the healthiest apples because they contain the least amount of pesticide residues.
There are a lot of ingredients on and in our food that we cannot see or do not know about–but this doesn’t mean they have no effect on our health or the environment. From the fields to our plates, these "additions" and "transformations" that are part of food-growing and food-processing (see Step 6) change the quality of the food we eat. How can we become more aware of this? One of the first things to do is to become a wise shopper by learning how to read labels
