Regenerate unhealthy soil by making and using compost and by recycling trash.

Unhealthy soil can be regenerated. That is, it can become healthy soil again! You already know ways to protect the health of the soil — now you can learn how to make unhealthy soil healthy again! Great ways to regenerate soil are by composting and recycling—two things that are fun and easy to do.

What might look like trash to you—things like dead plants, fruit scraps, grass clippings, straw—looks like delicious food to our microorganism friends. By recycling these plant and food scraps that come from the soil in the first place, we provide food for the microorganisms, and—in turn—they transform this trash into rich, healthy soil called humus. We call this process composting.
