Surprise! Soil is alive!
The earth beneath your feet is full of billions of microorganisms and small animals such as worms, beetles, moles and much, much more. Sadly, synthetic chemicals, pollutants and erosion can damage soil and kill these living organisms. That's a big problem because we need them to make healthy soil and healthy food. Everyone can respect all living forms, even if they are tiny.

Microorganisms are so very tiny that it takes a microscope to see them. Though they are very small, they have a very important job to do. What makes soil such a good home for plants and trees? You guessed it—microorganisms. These hard workers, called decomposers or Nature's recyclers, break down all decaying plant and animal matter and transform it into food for plants. Microorganisms eat leaves, eggshells, fruit and vegetable scraps, and other materials that we think of as trash and transform them into plant food. This is the ultimate recycling process!
